OZARK, Mo. – For the second straight day, Winona State University and Drury University split a twinbill at US Baseball Park. The Warriors and Panthers posted matching 6-3 scores in their respective victories.
Winona State's record stands at 4-3 after splitting the four-game weekend series at Drury.
Kyle Gendron (1-0) notched his fist win of the season in Game 1. The sophomore right-hander scattered eight hits and allowed three runs over 5.2 IP. Nicolas Herold allowed just one base runner over 1.1 IP to finish the seven-inning affair and record his second save of the year.
The Warriors scored a first inning run for the sixth straight ballgame in Sunday's opener on an RBI-single by Chad Herbst to score Zac Stange. Stange singled to lead off the tilt ahead of singles by Sam Kohnle and Herbst.
Austin Savary capped a three-run third inning with an RBI-double.
C. Herbst went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the victory, capping his effort with a run-scoring single in the fourth frame.
Drury flipped the script in Game 2, scoring a first inning run, only to see the Warriors pull ahead in the third, 2-1. Kohnle knotted the score with an RBI-double and C. Herbst struck again with a go-ahead run-scoring single.
Savary, the Game 2 starter, was tagged with four unearned runs in the fifth frame as a costly WSU error allowed the Panthers to take the lead for good. Savary (1-1) was charged with five runs (one earned) on 10 hits over 4.2 IP.
An RBI-single by Stange cut the Warrior deficit to 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning before the Drury pitching staffed blanked Winona State over the final three frames.
Kohnle went 5-8 with three runs scored in the doubleheader. The senior has hit safely in all seven games this season, including five multi-hit efforts, bolstering his average to .517.
The Warriors return to Missouri next weekend for a three-game series at Southwest Baptist University on February 22-23.
