Four Warriors scored in double figures and all but two scored in the game as the Warriors cruised to an 88-57 victory over Minnesota Crookston to advance to the second round of the NSIC playoffs for the second year in a row.
Caleb Wagner and
Alec Rosner both led the way with 16 points, while
Kevion Taylor and
Andrea Lo Biondo were right behind with 13. Lo Biondo also pulled down 11 boards to nab his fourth double-double of the year.
With the win the Warriors record moves to 18-11 on the year while Minnesota Crookston finishes their season at 11-18.
After a Rosner layup to start the game,
Andrea Lo Biondo caught fire from behind the arc, hitting three straight threes to put the Warriors up 11-0 right off the bat. A jumper from
Caleb Wagner put the Warriors up 27-9 at the midway mark of half and then Winona State really started to pull away. Two three pointers from
Kevion Taylor and one from Alec rosner were a key factor to a 17-8 run that would give Winona State a commanding 44-21 lead at the break.
Winona State held the Golden Eagles to just 25% shooting in the half and just 2-12 from beyond the arc.
Winona State didn't skip a beat in the second half, outscoring Crookston 44-36 in the frame. The second half was when the Warrior bench took over, as they scored 25 of the Warriors final 35 points.
Nick Klug ignited the crowd by going on a personal 9-0 run midway through the second half.
Keiron Goodwin,
Alier Riak and
Bill Flowers would all hit three pointers in the games final eight minutes and the Warriors would coast to the 31 point victory.
Winona State's defense held the NSIC's all time leading scorer, Harrison Cleary, to just 14 points on 5-17 from the field. Despite his struggles on the night, Cleary finishes his historic career as the NSIC leader in points and 16
th in DII history with 2,846 in his career.
Minnesota Crookston shot just 28.8% in the loss while the Warriors were on fire, hitting 53.1% of their shots while draining 16 threes.
The Warriors now move onto the second round of the NSIC playoffs where they will take on Minnesota Duluth at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls S.D. on Saturday, February 29. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
