The Winona State University Tennis team opened their spring break matches by defeating Webber International University 6-1, before falling 5-2 to Ave Maria University later in the afternoon.
With the split, the Warriors now move to 7-3 on the year.
In the opening match against Webber International, the Warriors scored the doubles point with wins from the duos of
Rachel Kelly and
Kendra Kappes (7-6) and
Rina Niehoff and
Tayla Card (6-1).
The Warriors managed to get the win in all but the #1 singles position.
Kaisey Skibba (4-6, 6-2, 10-5) won at #2 singles,
Rachel Kelly (3-6, 6-0, 11-9) won at #3 singles,
Tayla Card (7-5, 7-6) took the victory at #4 singles,
Rina Niehoff (6-0, 6-0) coasted to victory at #5 singles, and
Audrey Delich (6-0, 6-0) won her first ever match at #6 singles.
The second match against Ave Maria started off well, with the duos of
Kendra Kappes and
Rachel Kelly (6-3) and
Tayla Card and
Rina Niehoff (6-4) earning the doubles point for the Warriors.
Unfortunately, it was a tough go for the Warriors in singles, as
Rachel Kelly (6-4, 3-6, 10-7) was the only Warrior to nab a win. Kelly has been phenomenal all year, only losing one singles match at the #4 spot and going undefeated in doubles play so far.
The Warriors are back at it again tomorrow as they face Dickinson at 8 a.m. and Lee at 7 p.m. eastern time.
