Wayne, Neb. - Five different Winona State women's basketball players reached double-digits on Friday, and the Warriors outlasted Wayne State, 75-70, to claim their first win of the season.
Head coach
Scott Ballard saw a balanced effort on the scoresheet, with
Emma Fee and
Taylor Hustad tied for the team lead at 16 points apiece, while
Sydney Lodermeier added 16. Freshman
Mattie Schimenz hit for 10 points, as did
Ava Sergio.
With ten rebounds on the evening, Hustad had her first double-double of the year and Fee grabbed seven boards; Schimenz had four assists to pace the Warriors in that category.
As a team, Winona State shot 51.9% from the field and earned 19 trips to free throw line, converting on 13. The Warriors led most of the way, but the Wildcats kept it close in the fourth quarter, hitting four 3-pointers, while WSU was 0-for-2 from behind the arc in the final stanza.
The teams were tied in terms of points in the paint, with 38 for each team coming from down low. Winona State hit a season-high five blocked shots, led by
Ava Sergio with two.
The two teams will tipoff tomorrow at 2:30pm, in Rice Auditorium.
