Warrior women fall in weekend finale

WSU earns split on the road

Wayne, NE – Coming off their first win of the season, Winona State was looking to keep the ball rolling heading into Saturday's matchup. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Wildcats hit nearly half their threes (11-24) to propel them to a 72-61 victory. Freshman Mattie Schimenz led the Warriors with a career high 20 in the contest.

With the loss the Warriors drop to 1-5 overall (1-4 NSIC) while the Wildcats move to 5-5 overall (4-4 NSIC).

Winona State started the game off hot, hitting six of their first nine shots to go up 15-11 halfway through the first quarter. Over the course of the next five minutes the Warriors struggled, hitting only two of their final six shot of the quarter. A jumper by Allie Pickrain gave WSU a 19-18 lead with 1:15 left in the quarter, which was followed up by five straight points by the Wildcats to give WSC a 22-19 lead after one.

Winona State regained the lead early in the second quarter off five straight points from sophomore Caitlin Riley. After a layup by Taylor Hustad put WSU up 28-24 midway through the frame, Riley hit a deep ball from behind the arc and Mattie Schimenz hit four free throws to close out the quarter and give the Warriors a 35-31 at the half.

The second half was a different story for the Warriors, as they hit just nine shots in the entire half. One of those shots was a three-pointer by Schimenz that gave the Warriors their last lead of the game (42-40) with 7:17 left in the third quarter. A Pickrain jumper with 2:57 left tied the game at 47-47, but Wayne State closed the frame out on an 8-2 run to go into the final quarter leading 55-49.

The Warrior tried to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, with an Emma Fee and-1 and a Hustad layup each cutting the lead to three midway through the fourth quarter. The Wildcats responded with a 12-5 run to close the game and get the win.

Points off turnovers was the difference in the game, as Wayne State scored 22 points off 16 Warrior turnovers, compared to just 10 points off 14 turnovers for Winona State.

Freshman Mattie Schimenz led the way for the Warriors with 20 points, followed by Caitlin Riley with 13 and Taylor Hustad with eight.

Hustad pulled in six boards for the Warriors and Schimenz dished out five assists.

Winona State shot 22-51 (.431) from the field and 5-21 (.238) from behind the arc. Wayne State shot 25-57 (.439) from the field and an impressive 11-24 (.458) from three.

Winona State looks to bounce back next weekend as they take on Minnesota State Mankato in McCown. Games are set for Friday, February 5 at 6 p.m., and Saturday, February 6 at 2 p.m.
