WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's soccer team hits the road this weekend for their first two road contests of the 2021 season.
The Warriors (3-3 / 2-2 NSIC) will face Minot State ( 5-2 / 4-0 NSIC) on Friday, Oct. 1 at 3pm and then takes on the University of Mary (4-1-2 / 3-0-1 NSIC) at 3pm in Bismarck, N.D. The two programs, both unbeaten in NSIC play, occupy the top two spots in the NSIC women's soccer standings.
Minot State is led offensively by Sofia Lewis and Chloe Allen, both with four goals on the year. In goal, Maddie Kindred has earned a .996 goals against average while logging nearly 636 minutes in goal for the Beavers. MSU has claimed two of their five wins by shutout and have gone into overtime once this year. Minot State has won their last five matches after starting the year 0-2; WSU and MSU last played on Oct. 27, 2019, a 3-0 Warrior win in Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The University of Mary carries a four-match unbeaten streak into this weekend, and will face Upper Iowa on Friday before hosting Winona State on Sunday. The Marauders have a pair of players with two goals each on the year, with Hannah Richter leading UMary in points (6) and Kendra Park scoring two times so far this season. Kayla Alcott has a team-leading three assists. Madisyn Waltman has played every Marauder minute in goal this season, conceding five goals and making 35 saves.
Winona State is coming off their biggest win of the year, having beat the University of Minnesota Duluth 3-0 on Sunday, Sept. 26.
Ellie Wardell earned three assists in the first half of that contest, and sits atop the NSIC in assists per game (.667) and total assists on the season (4). As a team, Winona State's shutout was their second clean sheet of the season and the third one since the last time WSU took on Minot State, the aforementioned 3-0 Warrior win on Oct. 27, 2019.
Offensively,
Emily Chudik and
Riley Harmon lead WSU with two goals apiece.
Missy Greco has two assists so far on the year, and both goalkeepers,
Alyson Jumper and Yarnel Ortiz, have logged 270 minutes in goal this season, with each notching a shutout along the way.
