MANKATO, Minn. - The Winona State University women's soccer team fell to Minnesota State - Mankato by a 4-0 scoreline on Sunday, Oct. 10 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match hosted by the Mavericks.
The Warriors (3-7-0 / 2 6-0) held the Mavericks (8-1-2 / 6-1-1) to just one first half goal, an unassisted effort from Allie Williams in the 22nd minute of play. After the break however, Minnesota State notched a pair of goals in a four minute span to pull away from WSU in the NSIC contents. Minnesota State's Jenny Vetter struck for the home side with a goal in the 65th minute and followed up a short time later with a second score in the 69th minute of play. A penalty kick converted by Brynn Desens in the 81st minute resulted in the fourth and final Maverick tally of the afternoon.Â
Riley Harmon led the Winona State attack with four shots, two of which were on frame forcing saves from Maverick goalkeeper Mackenzie Rath.
Missy Greco had a pair of shots in the game as well, as did
Callie Menzel,
Jaida Wiege and
Kara Schramel.Â
As a team, Winona State generated eight corner kick opportunities, compared to nine for Minnesota State, and WSU goalkeeper
Alyson Jumper had nine saves in the game. The Maverick's generated 24 shots in the contest, with 13 of those on goal. Rath repelled all five Warrior efforts she faced.Â
For Winona State, the Warriors will return home this upcoming weekend when they host Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston in Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium. Kickoff against the Beavers will be at 5pm Friday, Oct. 15 and the start time for the Sunday Oct. 17 contest is set for 1pm.Â
