WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University soccer team, coming off of back-to-back weekend road trips, is set to host Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston in a pair of key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Contests (NSIC) matches this weekend.
In hosting the Beavers on Friday, Winona State will take on the 11th ranked team in the current United Soccer Coaches poll, marking the second consecutive nationally ranked opponent the Warriors will face. Most recently, WSU played at (RV) Minnesota State - Mankato last Sunday, a 4-0 Warrior setback.
Bemidji State University, currently second in the NSIC, are led in scoring by Sara Wendt who has 12 goals on the year. The Beaver goalkeeper corps is led by Alyssa Stumbaugh who is unbeaten at 8-0 on the season, having played 688 minutes. BSU's formidable offense has outscored opponents 25-8 this season. On two occasions, Bemidji State has gone into overtime, defeating Northern Michigan 3-2 in extra time on Sept. 12 and earning a two-OT 2-2 draw at Minnesota State - Mankato on Sept. 24.
Against Minnesota Crookston, the Warriors will look to score early and get on the front foot, due to the fact that UMC has struggled to score this year. The Golden Eagles have been shutout in their five of their last six contests and tallied just one goal in their lone win against Minnesota State - Moorhead. Abby Fettinger leads UMC in shots with 14; Fettinger, Morgan Laplante and Lanie Padelford all have scored on the season for the Golden Eagles.
