FORT HAYS, Kan. – The Winona State University men's golf team earned a tie for sixth place in a tough field of 15 teams at the Fort Hays State University Tiger Classic.
The Warriors shot a two-day, three-round total of 898 (305-294-299) and tied with Missouri Southern State for sixth place. Rogers State University won the event with a total score of 866 (296-292-278). Individual medalist honors went to Central Oklahoma's Kyle Hickey who finished with a three-over par 213.
Winona State was led by
Matthew Chandler and
Brady Holland, who each shot 221 (+11) and tied for 13th overall.
Chandler started the tournament with a first round score of 77 (+7), then bounced back with a one-over par 71 during round two. He concluded the tournament with a three-over 73. Chandler carded the second-most pars (37) out of any individual throughout the three rounds.
Holland opened round one with a five-over 75. Holland shot a 73 (+3) in each of the last two rounds. Consistent play led him to tie Chandler for the team-low and for the top-15 finish individually.
Gabe Goodman carded rounds of 76 (+6), 74 (+4), and 76 (+6) to finish with an overall total of 226 (+16). This score earned Goodman a tie for 30th.
Rounding out the scoring for the Warriors was
Matt Turner and
Dylan Brown. Turner had a three-round total of 230 (77-76-77) and finished 20-over par. Brown finished just three strokes back, shooting 233 (80-76-77).
WSU finished above the four other Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams competing in the event.
This event concluded Winona State's fall portion of their schedule. The Warriors will resume competitive play in the spring, with hopes to defend their NSIC Championship.
