#12 Warriors take down #8 Wildcats in five sets

WAYNE, Neb. – The #12 Winona State volleyball team defeated #8 Wayne State in a five-set thriller on the road, 3-2.

The Warriors (19-3, 10-3 NSIC) captured wins in sets two, four, and five over No. 8 Wayne State (17-4, 10-3 NSIC).

The opening frame featured both teams having nearly identical stats, but the Wildcats led most of the set and won it by a score of 25-20. The second set featured low hitting percentages by each team, and the set consisted of nine ties and five lead changes before Winona State claimed it 25-21.

Wayne State jumped out to an early lead in the third set and never looked back, winning the set handily 25-17. Winona State bounced right back and went on an early run in the fourth set. They built on their early lead and the Warriors won set four 25-16, forcing a deciding fifth set.

The fifth and final set was close all the way through. A run in the middle of the set by the Wildcats put them up 9-6, but Winona State stayed in the battle and ended up tying the score at 11-11. Back-to-back kills by Megan Flom and Sidney Paulson gave WSU several match points. On the second match point, Flom ended the match with her 24th kill of the night, giving Winona State a 15-13 fifth set victory and a 3-2 match victory.

Flom led all players once again with 24 kills and amassed a hitting percentage of .465, all while collecting eight block assists on the defensive end. Madison Larson continued great play for the weekend, knocking down 14 kills. Bre Maloney had an impressive 50 assists and was a threat on the attack, collecting six kills. Becca Pagel accounted for 30 digs, her second most this season.

The win wrapped up an undefeated road weekend for the Warriors. WSU will play at Upper Iowa on Thursday, Oct. 28 for a 6pm matchup. Winona State will then be home for the next two weekends as the regular season winds down.
