Alec Rosner leads Winona State to opening day win in men's basketball

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Alec Rosner scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Winona State University men's basketball team to an impressive 79 - 68 win over Pittsburg State on Friday, Nov. 12, helping the Warriors start the 2021-22 campaign on the front foot.

Rosner rang it up from behind the arc, going 6-of-9 from 3-point land and was perfect at the foul line at 4-of-4.The junior from Appleton, Wis. also had six rebounds, just one less than teammate Luke Martens who finished with seven boards. Conner Drew hit double digits as well with 12 points, while Devin Whitelow had nine, along with five assists. In 2019, Rosner scored 18 points against Viterbo University on 11/26, his previous best effort as a Warrior. 

As a team, Winona State shot 50.8% from the field and 43.8 from 3-point territory. The two teams were close in rebounding totals, with PSU having a slight edge, 34-36. Pittsburg State was sent to the line 26 times, connecting on 20 free throws; WSU was 5-of-11 from the charity stripe. Winona State racked up 11 points off PSU turnovers.

Pittsburg State (0-1, 0-0 MIAA) was led by Iziah James with 16 points. Ryan Pippens had nine rebounds.

For Winona State (1-0, 0-0 NSIC), Rosner's remarkable evening provides momentum as the Warriors will turn around and face Henderson State tomorrow in the Central Region Challenge at 2:30pm. For WSU, tomorrow's game will be their second and final matchup of the tournament while the Reddies open CRC play tomorrow and will compete on Sunday in their second game.
