Warriors dominate Mavericks

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University volleyball team picked up a home win in dominant fashion over Minnesota State University, Mankato winning 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-11).

The Warriors controlled all aspects of the match once againg, hitting for 49 kills to the Mavericks 22 and holding MSU to a hitting percentage of just 0.025. Madison Larson had herself a night, hitting for 13 kills on 26 attempts with no errors. Megan Flom and Sidney Paulson continued strong play in the middle and on the right side, each hitting for 10 kills.

Bre Maloney connected with Winona State hitters on 39 assists, good for an average of 13 per set. Four different Warriors tallied double-digit digs, led by Becca Pagel's 25 at a rate of an astounding 8.33 digs per set. Winona State served for four aces, in which Rylee Vaughn had three, and WSU was perfect on the receiving end with a reception percentage of 1.000.

Winona State set the tone early, winning the match's first four points on the way to win the first set 25-13. Set two featured 10 ties and six lead changes, but WSU won seven of the last eight points to take the set 25-19. The third and final set was all Warriors once again, led by Flom's four kills and Pagel's 10 digs. The Warriors hit for 15 kills while holding the Mavericks to a negative hitting percentage and won the set 25-11.

Tonight's win moves the Warriors to 22-3 overall and 13-3 within the conference, where they are now tied with Concordia-St. Paul for second and two games behind St. Cloud State for first.

The NCAA released their first regional rankings of the year and Winona State is ranked second in the NCAA DII Central Region, behind Central Missouri. Four other Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams are also ranked in the top 10.

The Warriors are back in action on Friday, Nov. 5 at 6pm in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court against Minot State. Winona State will be celebrating Parents Night at the match. WSU takes on UMary at 11am Saturday, where they will be honoring their seniors for Senior Day.
