Winona, Minn. - After dispatching the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, the Winona State University women's tennis team saw Saturday as an opportunity to test against the best in the Augustana University Vikings, who were tabbed as the top the team in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) women's tennis preseason coaches poll.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Vikings lived up to their billing, handing WSU a 7-0 loss in NSIC action at the Winona Tennis Center.
In doubles action to start the day, Winona State saw the #2 pairing of
Rachel Kelly and
Rina Niehoff push the Augustana team of Laura Arce Vieyra and Grace Goble to a 7-5 scoreline, the closest of the three doubles matches. In singles play, Augustana swept the table with Winona State's
Beth Murman pushing AU's #1 singles standout Valeriya Monko in the second set of a 6-0, 6-4 loss.
On the weekend, Winona State finished 1-1 in NSIC competition, with both matches played in Winona. Head coach
Tom Sanvik and the Warriors will take their first road trip of the season next weekend, as they travel to Moorhead, Minn. for matches against the University of Mary on Saturday, Feb. 20 and against Minnesota State-Moorhead on Sunday, Feb. 21. Saturday's matches will start at 3pm, while Sunday shall start at 9am.
