WSU goes 1-1 for second straight weekend

Fargo, N.D. - Facing off against the University of Mary, the Winona State women's tennis team earned the doubles point to open the competition and never looked back, cruising to a 6-1 win over the Marauders at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.

The Warriors picked up doubles wins at the #2 and #3 level, giving them the first point of the morning and setting the table for several strong performances. Rachel Kelly started the singles sets with a 6-3, 7-5 win in #2, and Rina Niehoff battled a tough UMary opponent at #3 and won, 7-6 (2), 7-5, giving Winona State a 3-0 advantage.

The Maurader's Tasha Dembo handed Beth Murman a three-set setback, 6-3, 2-6, 2-6, but WSU saw Sara Anderson pick up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Heidi Jacobson in #6 singles action.  Brooke Jorgensen and Audrey Delich continued the trend, claiming wins for Winona State at #5 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 scoreline and #4 singles 7-6 (5), 3-6, 10-7, respectively.

With the 6-1 win to close the weekend, Winona State earns a split, having narrowly fallen to undefeated Minnesota State - Moorhead the day before, 4-3.  Two weeks into the NSIC season, the Warriors sit at 2-2 in league play.  Winona State is scheduled to welcome Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 6pm and Bemidji State at noon on Sunday Feb. 28.   Both matches will be held at the Winona Tennis Center.
