Winona, Minn. - The Winona State baseball team fell 6-4 to (RV) Augustana in game three of their weekend series Sunday morning. The Vikings scored five of their six runs in the third inning and never looked back on their way to the two-run victory.
With the win Augustana moves to 24-8 (20-8 NSIC) while Winona State falls to 18-12 (15-10 NSIC).
Winona State jumped on the board early, with
Nick Herbst scoring on an RBI single from
Tanner Williams in the top of the first.
Zac Stange then scored on a
Dane Weiland RBI single in the in the second inning to put WSU up 2-0 after two.
After Augie's five-run third inning, Stange tried to give the Warriors a boost with a home run to right center in the seventh inning.
Down 6-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth,
Austin Savary attempted to start a comeback by scoring on a throwing error by the Viking's shortstop. It was not to be for the Warriors, however, as they were not able to plate another run in the inning.
Dillon Whittaker (1-3) took the loss for the Warriors.
Herbst, Stange, and Weiland all had two hits for the Warriors, while Stange led the way with two RBI's.Â
Winona State will be back at home on Wednesday, April 28 as they take on Upper Iowa University in a big NSIC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
