Duluth, Minn. - The No. 20 Winona State softball team used some late game heroics to defeat Minnesota Duluth 8-3 in game one of their Sunday doubleheader. That magic couldn't be replicated in game two however, as the Bulldogs would snap WSU's season high 11 game winning streak with a 4-2 win.
The Warriors move to 28-7 (17-5 NSIC) after the split while Duluth moves to 25-11 (15-7 NSIC).
Game One
The story of the first six innings of game one was missed opportunities for the Warriors, as they managed to score just one run while leaving 11 runners on base.
Katie Kolb scored the only run of the first six innings for the Warriors on an RBI double by
Rylee Stout.
Down 2-1 entering the top of the seventh,
Rylee Stout started the inning off with a bang as she blasted a long ball over the centerfield fence to tie the game at two. RBI's from
Teaghen Amwoza,
Ann Smolenski, and
Marissa Mullen extended the Warrior's lead to three. With two runners on an no outs, Kolb hit her fourth home run of the season to tack on three more insurance runs and give the Warriors an 8-2 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
Jordyn Kleman closed out the game in the seventh to give WSU the 8-3 victory.
Kleman (17-3) had another solid outing, allowing just three runs on six hits while striking out nine.
Stout and Smolenski each had three hits for the Warriors, while Kolb led the way with three RBI's and three walks.
Game Two
Unlike game one, Winona got on the board first in game two, going up 1-0 on a
Teaghen Amwoza home run in the top of the second.
Down 3-1 in the fifth,
Abbie Hlas scored a run on an
Alison Nowak RBI groundout to cut the Duluth lead to just one.
The Warriors managed to put two runners on with just one out in the top of the seventh, but couldn't find a way to bring them home and would fall by a score of 4-2.
Liz Pautz (9-4) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out 10.
Marissa Mullen was 3-for-3 in the game while Amwoza and Nowak each had an RBI.
The Warriors will be back at it next weekend as they take the long drive to Minot, ND to take on the Beavers on Saturday, May 1. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
