Sam Kohnle reached the 200 hit mark for his career with a base hit in the opening inning, but the Winona State University baseball team ran into another round of tough Northern State pitching on Saturday, April 3, falling to the Wolves 6-1 in the third and final game of the series.
Warriors batters were unable to solve NSU's Seth Brewer who pitched seven standout innings, earning the win over Winona State in the process. Brewer held WSU to just four hits and one run while striking out ten.
For the Warriors, four different pitchers took the hill in the game, with
Dillon Whittaker getting the start.
Whittaker went four and one-third innings, allowing eight hits and walking one. He struck out four of the 22 Wolves he faced and was saddled with four runs, all earned. Mitchel Mueller, Nicolas Herald and
Justin Firpo all saw stints in relief for head coach
Kyle Poock, with Firpo conceding the additional two NSU runs, both earned. As a staff, the Warrior pitchers struck out seven NSU batters and allowed just two walks.
After taking the lead on Kohnle's milestone single that scored
Nick Herbst, WSU struggled to solve Brewer most of the rest of the game, with only two Warriors collecting extra base hits.
Dane Weiland had a fifth inning double as the rest of the Winona State batting success was limited to two singles, hit by
Tanner Williams and
Austin Savary, respectively. Savary also drew a pair of free passes in his day at the plate.
On the basepaths,
Sam Kohnle also drew a walk and stole a bag for WSU. As team, the Warriors left eight men on base.
Northern State scored one run in the fourth inning, tacked on three more in the fifth and added an insurance run in the eighth to reach the 6-1 final scoreline. Reece Ragatz's solo home run in the fourth and his RBI double in the eighth frame helped pad the Wolves scoreline, with Warrior bats unable to match NSU on the day.
With the loss, Winona State falls to 9-9 overall and 6-7 in NSIC play.
The Warriors will face St. Cloud State on Tuesday, April 6, in a game originally scheduled for Wednesday. With impending weather and cooler temperatures predicted, SCSU moved the mid-week doubleheader up one day.
