Warrior Game Day: Women's Soccer

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's soccer team opens up their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) schedule today, hosting the University of Sioux Falls at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.  Kickoff on Maxwell Field is set for 5pm, CST.

The Warriors (1-1, 0-0 NSIC) and the Cougars (0-3, 0-0 NSIC) last faced off in 2019, with USF edging WSU 2-1 in Sioux Falls.   That match - 684 days ago - moved the series only slightly in terms of the recent history between the teams, as Winona State owns a 6-2 record against Sioux Falls in their last eight contests.  More importantly, the Warriors are 4-0 at home over that stretch and will be looking to start a new winning streak in the series.

Goalkeeper Yanel Ortiz is coming off of a 10-save shutout performance last Friday against Northern Michigan University, a 1-0 Warrior win. The veteran GK was a key component in the victory, making several key saves in the early stages of the match.  Forward Riley Harmon stepped up in the second half to deliver the game-winner, scoring at the 56 minute mark. The NMU contest was the second-straight game in which Winona State registered double-digits in shots. The high-water mark of 18 shots against UW-Parkside in the season opener will likely be a mark the Warriors look to equal or exceed today against the Cougars.

The University of Sioux Falls have dropped their first three games of the season, all non-conference affairs. The Cougars trip to Winona will be the first of a two-game weekend, as they face Upper Iowa on Sunday in Fayette. Goalkeepers Holli Knudsen and Caroline Ttize split their most recent game in the goal, combing to make 10 stops while giving up three goals in a 3-0 loss to Rogers State. USF has conceded at least one first-half goal in each of their three games so far and Winona State will likely be looking for a fast start on Family Weekend.
