Winona State downs Southwest Minnesota State to claim NSIC win

WINONA, Minn. - Reanne Weil scored her first goal as a Warrior on Sunday, and her strike late in the first half delivered Winona State (2-2, 1-1 NSIC) a home win over Southwest Minnesota State to close out Family Weekend.

Weil's tally came as the clock wound down in the first half and after teammate Riley Harmon doubled her goal count on the year by scoring in the 11th minute of the game. Ellie Wardell picked up the assist on Harmon's goal and Abigail Williams had the helper on Weil's game winner.

Freshman goalkeeper Aly Jumper got the start in goal and racked up six saves, none bigger than a 74th-minute stop against the Mustang's Selena Prolic in which Jumper went full extension and pushed Prolics' shot past the post.  SMSU opened the scoring in the contest on a second-minute goal scored by Alex Lotts, her second of the season.

Winona State had 12 shots total, six in each half. The Warriors put seven of those efforts on frame, while SMSU also put seven shots on target.  WSU persevered in tough conditions, with temperatures approaching 90 degrees on the day.  The teams were nearly even in fouls, with Winona State committing 12 infractions, SMSU 11.

The Warriors improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in NSIC play; the Mustangs fall to 1-3 overall, 0-2 in the league.

Winona State is next in action on Friday, Sept. when they host St. Cloud State University at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5pm CST on Maxwell Field.
