Winona State women's soccer set for two matches this weekend

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's soccer team is set to host St. Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota Duluth in their last two games of a six-game home stand to open the 2021 season.

The Warriors (2-2 overall / 1-1 NSIC) will see two teams that have found the start of the season some rough sledding, as the Huskies (0-3-1 overall / 0-2 NSIC) and the Bulldogs (0-5 / 0-2 NSIC) are collectively winless on the year so far.

For St. Cloud State, the offense has been the issue, as the Huskies have been shutout in three of their four games so far.  SCSU did battle back to earn a 2-2 draw against the University of Mary at home, with Nicole Friis scoring at the 60-minute mark to force the tie. Additionally, in two of their losses, SCSU held their opponents to just one goal.  The Huskies out-shot Minot State significantly in their 1-0 loss to the Beavers, with SCSU almost tripling the scoring efforts of MSU, 17-10 in shots and 10 - 2 shots on goal.

The Bulldogs of UMD have been at home for three of their five losses so far this year, and turned in a statistically even effort against University of Mary in their last outing, a 1-0 defeat to the Marauders.  In that game, UMD and UMary were nearly even in shots (12 UMM - 11 UMD) and shots on goal (6 UMM - 5 - UMD), and the two teams forced an identical number of saves with five apiece. Bulldog goalkeeper Sophia Grenz has played in goal in each contest, logging 450 minutes so far and racking up 37 saves.

Winona State will look to continue their momentum from a 2-1 home win over Southwest Minnesota State in which they came from behind for the victory.  In that game, freshman Reanne Weil opened up her scoring account for the season - and her career - netting a game winner as the first half wound down. Overall, Riley Harmon leads WSU in goals (2) and points (4), while Jaide Wiege leads the team in shots (11).  In goal, Yanel Ortiz has faced 39 shots, earned shutout in a 1-0 win over Northern Michigan and is 1-2 overall. Aly Jumper is 1-0 on the year, making six saves in her Warrior debut against the Mustangs on Friday, Sept. 19.

Kickoff against St. Cloud State is set for 5pm CST on Friday, Sept. 24, while the Bulldog - Warrior contest will be at 1pm on Sunday, Sept. 26. Both contests are on Maxwell Field in Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium and are available on the NSIC Network.
