WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University volleyball team continued their winning ways on Saturday at the expense of the Northern State Wolves, as the Warriors dispatched NSU in three sets at McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court.
The 3-0 whitewash of the Wolves moves the Warriors to 8-7 on the year and completes a NSIC weekend in which head coach
Joe Getzin earned his 350
th career win the night before in a 3-0 victory over MSU-Moorhead.
While the Warriors had their way with the Dragons on Friday, Saturday's matchup with Northern State was more closely contested, particularly in the third set after NSU battled back to tie Winona State 24-24 after being down 24-20.
However, Getzin and the Warriors kept their composure and earned the win following a kill by
Lydia Lange to move to 25-24 and then a combined block by
Jaci Winchell and
Taylor Pagel to seal the victory.
WSU beat NSU in set one 25-16 and set two 25-21 and closed out the exciting third frame behind the strength of a loud McCown crowd.
Taylor Pagel was a major factor in the win, racking up 13 kills while Warrior teammate
Madison Larson had 10. Three Warriors reached double-digits in digs, with
Kylie Welch leading the way at 15,
Casey Volkmann with 12 and
Sidney Paulson had 10.
Jaci Winchell dished out 35 assists while orchestrating the Warrior attack and Volkmann joined
Rayliene Joens in success at the service line, as Volkman had three service aces and Joens had two.
Winners of four straight NSIC matches, WSU (8-7 overall, 4-4 NSIC) will look to keep the momentum moving on Tuesday, Oct. 4 when they host Upper Iowa University. The Warriors and Peacocks are set for a 6 p.m. start time in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court.
