WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University volleyball team returned to McCown Gymnasium this evening and earned a three-set victory over Minnesota Crookston by scores of 25-15, 25-18, and 25-23.
Strong defensive play, and opportunistic hitting throughout the match helped the Warriors cruise to a sweep over the Golden Eagles.
Three Warriors collected double-digit digs, led by
Casey Volkmann's 19 for an average of 6.33 per set.
Sidney Paulson and
Jaci Winchell added 16 and 12 digs, respectively.
Mikenna Joerger led WSU with four blocks, including three solo blocks in the opening set.
On the attack, Paulson connected on 16 kills to record her ninth double double of the season.
Madison Larson added 10 kills and
Taylor Pagel was efficient, knocking down nine kills with a .438 hitting percentage. Winchell orchestrated the Warrior attack with 34 assists.
Winona State started the scoring early by winning the match's first six points and rolling to a 25-15 victory in the opening frame.
WSU controlled the second set as well, holding a comfortable lead and taking a 2-0 advantage after winning 25-18 in the second.
After being up 16-11 in the third set, Winona State's lead was quickly taken away after Minnesota Crookston rallied six straight points to go up 17-16. Head coach
Joe Getzin gathered the Warriors together and WSU eventually took the final set 25-23 to clinch the victory.
Winona State will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 15, as they host Bemidji State. First serve is scheduled for 2pm in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court.
