Winona State selected 4th in NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll

Burnsville, Minn. - The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) has released the 2022-23 Indoor Track and Field Preseason Coaches' Poll and Winona State was selected fourth by coaches from around the Conference. In addition, two Warrior standouts have both been tabbed as NSIC Athletes to Watch heading into the season. 

Winona State accrued 154 points in the coaches poll, sitting just above Minnesota Duluth (148) and following third-place University of Mary (162).  Click here for the complete NSIC poll release. 

For Winona State, Shereen Vallabouy and Xana Leum return to lead Winona State into the indoor track and field season are were named the WSU Athlete's to Watch this year for head coach Mason Rebarchek.

Vallabouy is the reigning NCAA Division II 400 meter champion, having won the 2022 NCAA Division II 400-meters, turning in a time of 53.79 to win the event in the Robert W. Plaster Center at Pittsburg State University on March 12, 2022. Vallabouy also competed on the international stage this past summer, taking part in races at the Vallabouy, the World Athletics Championships, held in Eugene, Oregon and the Commonwealth Games, set in Birmingham, England.

About Vallabouy, Rebarchek noted, "Shereen is coming off a year that saw her win the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA 400 meter crowns. The times she ran last spring allowed her to represent her country and compete in the World Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games over the summer. Those experiences have helped her grow in her confidence and learn how to compete against great competition and under pressure. That growth combined with her work ethic and incredible internal drive to push herself to be better each day are setting her up for what could be another successful season." 


Highlights for Vallabouy:

  • Won the 2022 NCAA Division II indoor Championship in the 400-meter race.
  • Anchored the WSU 4 X 400 meter NSIC Championship relay team.
  • Was the first NCAA Div. II national champion in Winona State track and field history since 2016.
  • Owns the WSU All-time 400-meter indoor record.

 

Leum looks poised for a break-out season in the jumps for WSU and notched some impressive scores in her career. Leum currently own's a personal best 27.04 in the 200-meters, 8.85 in the 55-meter hurdles and a 8.94 in the 60-meter hurdles. In the jumps, Leum registered a 5.35-meter (17' 6.75") long jump mark and 11.17-meter (36' 7.75") triple jump effort. 

"Xana has embraced the demands of her sport and has grown tremendously in her understanding of what it takes to be successful. She not only works hard physically, but understands and navigates the mental and emotional demands of being a successful college athlete. She has worked very hard to set herself up for great success this season," said Rebarchek. 
 Highlights for Leum:

  • Holds the second-best Winona State all-time 60-meter hurdle mark at 8.94.
  • Earned a runner-up finish in the 60-meter hurdles at MSU Invite on Jan. 14, 2022.
  • Also runner-up in 60-meter hurdles at UW-Stout Open on Jan. 22, 2022.
  • Was second in triple jump at Mark Schuck Dual on Jan. 30, 2021.

The Winona State women's indoor track and field season will begin the 2022-23 season this weekend at the Minnesota State Chuck Peterson Open & Multi on Saturday, Dec. 3.  The 2022-23 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships are set for February 24-25 in the Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minnesota, hosted by Minnesota State University, Mankato.
