Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Joey Mueller, Athletic Communications

WSU women's tennis battles to defeat Bemidji State, 5-2

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Winona State University women's tennis team fought hard to win key matches and earn their first road victory of the year over Bemidji State, 5-2.

The Warriors won the doubles point for the third straight match, led by the No. 1 doubles team of Rachel Kelly and Rina Niehoff who defeated the Beavers with ease, 6-2. Brooke Holloway and Kyley Bolster fell at the third doubles position, 2-6. In the final doubles match, Beth Murman and Sara Anderson teamed up at No. 2 doubles and won 7-6 (7-3) in a thrilling match to secure the important doubles point for WSU.

Winona State set the tone early in singles with Niehoff making quick work of her opponent and winning 6-3, 6-1. Holloway and Mikayla Hanson each won their singles matches in identical fashion, taking down their opponents by scores of 6-1, 6-4 at the fifth and sixth singles positions.

The other three singles matches went the full three-set length, where Anderson was able to bounce back at No. 4 singles after dropping the first set to win the second and third sets by 6-1 scores. Kelly and Murman each won their first sets but fell in hard-fought matches at first and second singles, respectively.

Winona State (3-2, 2-1 NSIC) will be back in action tomorrow morning, when they take on Minnesota Crookston at 10am in Bemidji, Minn.
