OZARK, Mo. – The Winona State University baseball team dropped the final contest of the three-game series at Drury University, 2-9.
Cooper Kapanke once again was a bright spot for the Warriors at the plate, hitting a solo home run to left field in the second inning and a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to bring in
Miller Wallace. They were the only two runs WSU was able to score in the game.
After the game was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Panthers scored five runs on three hits including a bases-clearing, two-out double to bring three runs across the plate. Drury brought in two more runs in the eighth to add extra insurance and ended up winning the game 9-2.
Carter Brinkman went 2-for-4, including a double to lead WSU in the batter's box.
Kyle Yu, Wallace, and Kapanke each recorded one hit on the day.
Bailey Banaszynski started the game on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings, striking out seven, and allowing just one run on two hits.
Caleb Strack pitched 2.2 innings and gave up six runs on four hits, while
Zach Watzka and
Nicolas Herold each saw time on the mound for WSU.
Mason Meeks pitched 8.0 innings for Drury and allowed just one earned run on four hits, while striking out three batters to earn the win. Five different Panthers recorded extra-base hits, with Tyler Bastunas leading the way going 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
Winona State (0-6, 0-0 NSIC) will head to Bolivar, Mo. to take on Southwest Baptist University for a three-game series on Friday, Feb. 25 and Saturday, Feb. 26. It will be the last series for the Warriors prior to heading to Florida for a spring break trip between March 3-9.
