WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University women's tennis team battled hard but fell just short to UMary in a down to the wire match.
The Warriors earned the doubles point after another strong showing by the top two doubles teams.
Rachel Kelly and
Rina Niehoff made quick work at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-2. The second doubles team of
Beth Murman and
Sara Anderson used an early break to win their match 6-4.
In singles play, Murman rolled over her opponent and dropped just one game total. Anderson dropped the first set 1-6 but battled back to win the second and third sets in convincing fashion. At that point, the Warriors were up 3-0 over the Marauders and needed just one more singles victory to clinch the match.
Unfortunately, UMary was able to battle back and win at the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 singles positions to tie the match 3-3. At No. 6 singles,
Mikayla Hanson dropped the opening set, but won her second set to force the deciding third set. The final set went into a tiebreaker and UMary eventually won the breaker, 7-2, to clinch the match, 4-3.
