Winona State baseball drops NSIC contest to Minot State

WINONA, Minn. -  After earning a split on Sunday against Minot State University, the Winona State University baseball team had a chance to move above .500 in NSIC action by winning the rubber match of a three-game series against MSU.

Unfortunately, the visiting Beavers had other plans, starting hot on a cold day at Loughrey Field, posting a seven-run first inning to settle into the driver's seat in the game and never look back in a 14-1 win over the Warriors.

Minot State roughed up WSU starting pitcher Cameron Kramer, scoring seven times on six hits in their opening at bats. Winona State responded by scoring in the bottom of the first when Kyle Yu scored on a Dane Weiland single.

After conceding the one run, Beaver starter RJ Martinez showed command the rest of the way over six innings, holding Winona State scoreless, while striking out nine. Martinez reached triple digits in his pitch count at 102 while scattering five hits during his time on the hill for MSU. Logan Herrera threw the final frame for the Beavers.

Peter Tveite came on in relief of Kramer to start the second, throwing three solid innings. Tveite gave up four hits, allowed no runs and struck out two Beaver batters. Zach Watzka entered in fifth inning and conceded four runs in one and 2/3 innings, eventually giving way to John Breske. When the dust settled, Minot State racked up another seven runs in the sixth, doubling their lead.  Nathan Platter finished the game for WSU, striking out two of the three outs he recorded.

At the plate for the Warriors, Yu was 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot and earned walk as well, scoring the lone WSU run.  Dane Weiland was 2-for-3 with a double, while Cooper Kapanke (1-for-3) also hit a double on the day.

As a team, Winona State (4-12, 2-3 NSIC) had one run on six hits and committed two errors. Minot State (10-13, 4-4 NSIC) scored 14 runs on 19 hits and were flawless in the field.

The Warriors are scheduled to host Southwest Minnesota State on Wednesday, March 30.  The NSIC doubleheader is set for a first pitch of 1:30 pm in the cozy confines of Loughrey Field.
