LAKELAND, Fla. - The Winona State University baseball team saw a big sixth inning for the home side become the difference in the second game of their annual spring break trip, falling to host Florida Southern College 13-4 on Friday, March 4 in Lakeland, Florida.
Nick Herbst earned the first RBI of the game for either team with a double in the top of the third to open the scoring, but the Mocs managed to respond with three runs in the bottom of the same frame to take a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Florida Southern rang up eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to take control of the contest stacking a handful of singles and taking advantage of a wild pitch to plate a pair of Mocs. Then, FSC's Jared DeSantolo homered with two aboard to move the scoreboard to 12-2 with the game two-thirds complete.
In the seventh, Winona State again saw a Herbst hit send a Warrior home, as his single through the right side scored
Dane Weiland. Moments later,
Derek Baumgartner sent a long sacrifice fly to deep center, scoring
Joshua Hawksford. However, the Mocs' pitching staff was able to stymie WSU over the remainder of the evening.
FSC added one more in the eighth inning and Winona State was held scoreless in the top of the ninth to end the game.
On the mound, Winona State's
Dillon Whittaker got the start, going five and 2/3's innings, notching a strikeout and conceding 12 runs, 11 of which were earned.
Zach Watzka went one and 1/3 and
John Breske pitched all of the eighth inning for head coach
Kyle Poock.
With the setback, Winona State falls to 1-1 on their spring trip and 1-7 overall. The Warriors will return to action tomorrow, Saturday March 5, when they take on Seton Hill University at 5:45 EST.
