Warrior Game Day : Softball

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University softball team will host Bemidji State University today, Sunday April, 10, in a NSIC doubleheader beginning at noon at Maynard R. Johnson Field in Winona, as the Warriors look to complete the weekend sweep after dispatching the Golden Eagles of Minnesota Crookston yesterday.

Originally scheduled to be held in Bemidji, the WSU - BSU contests will have the Warriors as the away team in both games today.

The Warriors saw a balanced barrage of power hitting and strong pitching on Saturday, as Liz Pautz and Abbie Hlas led the team to their first back-to-back shutouts of the season, beating UMC 8-0 in game one and 15-0 in game two.

WSU belted five home runs over the two games, highlighted by a Libby Neveau grand slam in game one that propelled the Warriors to a commanding 6-run lead in game one in their first at-bats. Abbie Hlas had a day at the plate and in the circle, hitting a home run in game one while racking up eight strikeouts in game two, throwing a 5-inning complete game.  Combined with Pautz's game one three-hitter, the two Wariror pitchers struck out 17 Golden Eagles, walked just two and scattered six hits over ten total innings.

Defensively, Winona State was perfect over the two games and a diving grab by Hlas in game and 1.000 fielding percentage as a team on the day highlighting the Warrior effort in the field. Winona State has won three games in shutout fashion in their last five outings.

Bemidji State arrives in Winona with a 7-21 overall mark and 4-4 NSIC record. The Beavers are coming off a pair of losses at Upper Iowa University on Saturday and have beaten the Warriors just once in the past 24 matchups.
