BRANDON, S.D. - The Winona State University baseball team suffered its first setback in the 2022 NSIC Baseball Tournament, falling 12-4 to Augustana University.
In a game that started on Thursday, May 12 but was halted in the fourth inning due to weather, Winona State (17-22) saw Augustana (43-8-1) pull away with a three-run seventh inning to deal the Warriors their first loss of the postseason.
Winona State starter
Kyle Gendron threw the first three innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out three.
Dillon Whittaker took over in the fourth and went four innings, conceding five runs, four of which were earned.
Zach Watzka was on the hill for the final inning, allowing two earned runs. Overall as a staff, WSU surrendered 15 hits while striking out seven Vikings. Gendron was tagged with the loss, moving his season record to 3-2.
At the plate,
Nick Herbst and
Miller Wallace both hit home runs for the Warriors, with Wallace's blast with a runner on proving Winona State an early 2-0 lead. Herbst homered in the sixth inning, a solo shot, while
Joshua Hawksford added a double.
Augustana hit six home runs in the game, led by Jordan Barth who had two. The Vikings scored four runs in the third inning and three in the seventh, along with a pair of two-run frames in pulling away from WSU.

The Bulldogs beat Winona State in two of three games this spring, with WSU taking game one of their three-game series 6-3, but falling to UMD 5-4 and 6-4.
