MARSHALL, Minn. - The Winona State University soccer team battled back to earn a 1-1 draw against Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday, Sept. 11, capping an unbeaten NSIC weekend for the Warriors.
The host Mustangs scored in the first minute of the contest, with Brooke Wetterstrom scoring off an assist from Alex Lotts and Kirsten Wetterstrom. Winona State responded through
Jaida Wiege, scoring an unassisted effort in the 32nd minute to draw the teams level at 1-1.
For Wiege, the tally marked her second score in two consecutive matches, as the senior from Coon Rapids, Minn. had the game-winner 48 hours earlier in the Winona State 1-0 win over Sioux Falls, and her strike on Sunday is her third goal of the 2022 campaign. Wiege's goal was part of an evenly played first half in which the Warrior and Mustangs in which the teams had identical numbers in shots (7) and saves (2).
In the final 45 minutes, WSU goalkeeper
Chloe Swanson successfully dealt with an increased SMSU attack, as the Mustangs out-shot the Warriors 12-4 in the second half. Swanson registered five saves in the second stanza and organized her defense successfully in five corner kick situations for the hosts. Winona State had just one second-half corner kick - and two total in the game - while generating four shots in the final 45 minutes. On the day, SMSU out-shot WSU 19-11 and the Mustangs put eight efforts on goal, compared to five for Winona State.
Following the weekend, Wiege has scored in back-to-back games and moves her career goal scored total to seven. Swanson totaled six saves in the contest and is unbeaten in 2022 as the starting goalkeeper, registering a 3-0-1 record on the season. Winona State has played five consecutive games on the road so far this year.
Winona State (3-1-1) will continue the Warrior road show next weekend, when WSU travels to St. Cloud State University on Friday, Sept. 16 and then take on the University of Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, Sept. 18. The Warriors - Huskies contest is set for 6 p.m. and Winona State will kickoff at UMD at 1 p.m.
