DULUTH, Minn. - The Winona State University women's soccer team earned a key NSIC victory on Sunday, Sept. 18, as senior
Riley Harmon scored two goals in a 3-1 WSU victory at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Harmon's goals - one in each half - led the Warrior attack that responded favorably after being shut out on Friday in a 2-0 loss to SCSU. Winona State also took advantage of a UMD miscue when the Bulldogs scored an own goal just two minutes after Harmon opened the scoring on the day.
Harmon's first goal was assisted by
Jaida Wiege and came in the 13th minute of play. The UMD own goal occurred at the 14:06 mark to spot WSU a 2-0 lead less than 15 minutes into the game.
Minnesota Duluth responded with a goal of their own when the Bulldogs' Hannah Caldwell beat Winona State goalkeeper
Chloe Swanson. Caldwell's goal ended the scoring for both sides in the first half and the teams headed to the lockeroom with the Warriors leading 2-1.
After the break, UMD continued to pressure Winona State, with the home side outshooting WSU in the second half, 4-2. However, one of the two shots the Warriors did generate in the second 45 minutes found the back of the net, as Harmon hit paydirt again, this time with an assist from
Grace Seim. For the senior from Mundeline, Ill. the second-half strike was her third goal of the season, tying her with Wiege for the team lead.
The physical contest saw 22 fouls combined between the two teams and Warrior captain
Reanne Weil earned a yellow card at 46:50. UMD also had a caution laster in the second half when Eliana Maricano was shown the yellow. Swanson registered four saves in the match and Minnesota Duluth held a shot advantage over WSU, 11-5 for the game.
The Warrior win over the Bulldogs ran the Winona State winning streak over UMD to five consecutive victories, dating back to 2017. WSU has won eight of the past nine matchups between the two teams.
Winona State (4-2-1, 2-1-1 NSIC) completes an epic seven-match string of away games to start the 2022 campaign and will return to Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium for their first regular-season games at home next weekend. WSU will host Minot State on Friday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. The Warriors also host the University of Mary on Sunday, Sept. 25 at noon.
