WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie against the University of Mary at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 25, earning a shutout and a valuable point in the NSIC standings against one of the only two unbeaten teams in the league.
The Marauders entered Sunday's match with a 3-0-2 mark in league play and 6-0-2 overall record but were held scoreless by Winona State goalkeeper
Chloe Swanson and a Warrior back line led by
Bailey Deininger. As a team, WSU also earned the distinction of becoming the first side to keep the Marauders off the scoreboard since Minnesota State, Mankato beat UMary 1-0 in the 2021 NSIC Soccer Tournament.
In the first half of Sunday's contest, Winona State traded shots with UMary blow-for-blow as both teams created scoring opportunities from set pieces and the run of play. UMary's Olivia Gardner hit the post on a Marauder effort in the 18th minute and WSU saw
Reanne Weil force a save by Madisyn Waltman with just three minutes to go in the half. Overall, for the period, the University of Mary held a narrow advantage in shots, 7-6.
After the break and with the the Marauders pressing the attack, Winona State leaned on their veteran defense with Deininger leading the way. In the 62nd and 67th minute, WSU's Swanson denied UMary's Mo Malone, providing the Warriors a pair of key stops at an important time in the match. Swanson would go on to collect four saves on the day and earn her third shutout of 2022. On the attacking end for WSU, Deininger added a shot on goal to the Warrior effort, as did
Sarah Strating and
Reanne Weil.
University of Mary concluded the game with 15 shots, four on goal, and three corner kicks. WSU had seven shots, putting three on frame, and earned one corner. With two points in two games on the NSIC weekend, Winona State moves into seventh place following Sunday matches from around the NSIC.
UMary departs Maxwell Field with a 6-0-3 overall record and an NSIC slate of 3-0-3, while Winona State moves to 4-2-3 on the season and a 2-1-3 mark in NSIC play. The Warriors will continue their home stand next weekend, when they host Concordia University, St. Paul on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. and Minnesota State, Mankato on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
