Warrior Game Day : Soccer

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University soccer team hosts Bemidji State University today, Sunday, Oct. 1, in a 1 p.m. match at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium. 

Winona State (2-3-3, 1-2-2 NSIC) welcomes Bemidji State (5-0-3, 3-0-1 NSIC) with the intent to deal the Beavers their first loss of the year.  BSU was held to a 1-1 by Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, in a match that was delayed due to lightning and required the Beavers score in the last five minutes to salvage the point. WSU cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over Minnesota Crookston Friday evening in the Warriors' 2023 home opener. 

The Warriors battled back to earn a 2-2 draw on the road at Minnesota State - Moorhead last Sunday, using a second-half Abigail Williams penalty kick goal and a timely breakaway save by Alyson Jumper in the game's final minute to preserve the point for WSU.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES 

Winona State owns a 18-10-3 mark over BSU, dating back to Sep. 26, 1996.

The Warriors lost 1-0 at Bemidji State last season, a 55th minute goal the difference in the game.

Winona State and Bemidji State played to a 1-1 draw in the last meeting at Maxwell Field, Oct. 15, 2021. Riley Harmon scored for WSU in the 25th minute of that match. 

WSU has earned shutouts in two of their their three matches this year. 

WSU returns a trio of key attacking players who factored heavily in goal production last fall; Reanne WeilMadelynn Drasher, and Abigail Williams look to lead the Warriors. 

Last season, the Warriors played in ten, one-goal games.

Winona State was picked tenth in the NSIC Coaches poll  

Head coach Jill Leibforth is in her first year as head coach at Winona State.  

Winona State played their first seven matches on the road to open 2023.  

The BSU fixture will be the second of four home matches for WSU. 

WSU assistant coach Joe Davis will join for his second year as an assistant coach and first year under Jill Leibforth

Goalkeeper coach Ben Olson joined the Warrior staff this fall.

Bemidji State STORYLINES

Bemidji State has amassed a 5-0-3 overall mark and 3-0-1 record in the NSIC
The Beavers were held to a 1-1 draw against Southwest Minnesota State on Friday. 
The Beaver - Mustang match on Friday included a long delay due to weather. BSU scored in the final five minutes for the draw.
BSU is 4-0 at home, 1-0-2 on the road.  
In 2022, Bemidji State advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, falling to Ferris State 2-0. 
Katrina Barthelt leads BSU in goals (6), shots (33) and assists (2). 
Jim Stone enters his 22nd season as head coach at BSU.
