Winona State competes against Southeastern Oklahoma at 2023 Central Region Crossover

Box Score St. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Winona State University women's basketball team lost to Southeastern Oklahoma State, 75-74 in the second game of the 2023 Central Region Crossover Challenge.  WSU and SEOSU battled down to the wire, playing a pair overtime periods to settle the contest.

Winona State and SEOSU competed in a contest that saw 14 lead changes and slim margins of error up and down the stat line. Although the Warriors held a narrow 24-23 lead at halftime, the Savage Storm matched WSU point-for-point in the second half and used a pair of free-throws late in the game to pull ahead with 14 seconds to go. However, Vivica Bretton's layup with just 14 seconds remaining tied the two teams at 63-63, forcing overtime.

In the overtime session, WSU was behind 66-65 when Mattie Schmienz scored on a driving layup to stake the Warriors a one-point lead. A foul with six seconds to go in the OT saw SEOSU with the chance for a late winner, but the Savage Storm converted just one of the two free throw attempts, tying the game at 66-66 and forcing the second overtime session.

Bretton and Olivia Gamoke were the top two Winona State offensive threats, notching 15 and 12 points on the night, respectively. Vanessa Alexander led WSU with nine rebounds while Emma Carpenter and Mattie Schimenz had three assists apiece.

As a team, WSU was 30-of-72 (41.7%) from the field and hit 7-of-34 (20.6%) 3-pointers in the game. The Warriors struggled at the foul line, going 7-of-12 (58.3.0%) against the Savage Storm. After outscoring SEOSU 19-18 in the second quarter, WSU saw Southeastern Oklahoma pull away in the second half with a 54-point final two frames.
