Warrior Game Day: Women's Basketball

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's basketball team is looking to close out the 2023 calendar year on a high note, facing off against Michigan Tech (5-4, 1-1 GLIAC) at home on Tuesday, Dec. 19. 
 
Winona State (3-8, 3-4 NSIC) and Huskies are scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip-off in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court on Tuesday.  The showdown will be the fourth-ever meeting between the two squads and first matchup since Nov. 23, 2002, when WSU beat MTU 77-68. 
 
 
GAME & FAN INFORMATION

  • Tuesday's contest will take place in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court. 

WINONA STATE STORYLINES  

  • WSU is 3-8 on the year, 3-4 in NSIC play.  

  • The Warriors have won three of their last six contests 

  • WSU earned an NSIC road sweep with wins at Wayne State (61-43) and Augustana (53-44) two weekends ago. 

  • The Warriors are averaging 56.7 points/game and conceding 62.7 points per outing. 

  • Olivia Gamoke is leading Winona State in assists, with 18 on the year.  

  • Alex Dornfeld is the top Warrior rebounder, averaging 6.3 rebounds/game 

  • Dornfeld and Vanessa Alexander have both had a 12-rebound game this season.  

  • Hailey Markworth has a team-best seven steals on the year for head coach Ana Wurtz

  • Olivia Gamoke leads WSU in scoring (9.8 ppg). 

  • Emma Carpenter leads the team in three-point attempts (49), and minutes per game (31.1). 

  • On Tuesday, the Warriors are facing an opponent they have not yet seen in the WSU Women's basketball history. 

  • Head coach Ana Wurtz is in her second season as head coach at Winona State.  
     

Michigan Tech STORYLINES 

  • Michigan Tech is 5-4 overall, 1-1 in the GLIAC. 

  • MTU is coming off of a conference loss against Wayne State University. 

  • Michigan Tech's Isabella Lenz leads the team in scoring (13.1).  

  • The Huskies are averaging 66.3 ppg. 

  • Michigan Tech has reached or surpassed 70 points on three occasions this season.  

  • The Huskies had a 3-0 start to the year beating William Jewell, Lewis, and Southwest Minn. State. 

  • Head coach Sam Clayton has been the head coach at MTU since 2018 and holds a 95-45 record at the helm of the program. 

WARRIOR NOTABLES 

  • Head coach Ana Wurtz, assistant coach Hannah McGlone, & assistant coach Emily Kieck are the only all-female coaching staff in the NSIC that also competed at their alma mater as student-athletes 

  • Dornfeld was the 2023-24 NSIC Warrior women's basketball player to watch for this season
