Balanced Warrior effort leads to Winona State 61-43 win at Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. - The Winona State University women's basketball team used a balanced effort to claim a key NSIC road victory, defeating Wayne State College 61-43 on the road at WSC on Friday, Dec. 8. 

Playing in Rice Auditorium, Hailey Markworth reached double-digits in scoring, one of eight different Warriors to factor into the scoring against the Wildcats.  Alex Dornfeld hauled in 12 rebounds, leading the WSU effort on the glass as Winona State earned their second NSIC win of the season.

How It Happened

Despite back-to-back buckets by Ava Sergio and Emma Carpenter, Wayne State opened up strong against WSU, outscoring the Warriors 14-12 in the opening stanza. 

In the second quarter, things changed. Hailey Markworth helped spark the turnaround, knocking down a jumper at 8:37 mark in the second frame. 

WSU would go on to outscore the Wildcats 24-3 in the second stanza, the most lopsided score of a 10-minute frame this year for Winona State. 

At The Half: Winona State 36, Wayne State 17

Coming out of the locker room, Wayne State repeated their opening quarter performance, outscoring WSU 11-6 in the third frame. However, Winona State's Alex Dornfeld connected on a layup late in the quarter, allowing WSU to maintain a 15-point lead at 42-27 in the late stages of the third. 

WSU would return to their high-scoring ways in the fourth and final frame, earning a 19-15 fourth quarter advantage, and with it, a 61-43 Warrior win.

Winona State snapped a three-game skid to the Wildcats with the win.
The Winona State win gives WSU a narrow 1-game advantage over the last 11 contests at 6-5 Warriors. 
The 19-point win was the largest margin of victory between the two teams since a 74-37 WSU loss in 2018.
