NSIC Weekend : Softball

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University softball team will welcome a pair of NSIC squads to Maynard Johnson Field on Sunday, April 2 and Monday, April 3, with the University of Sioux Falls taking on the Warriors Sunday and Southwest Minnesota State facing WSU on Monday. Both matchups are scheduled to start at 1:30pm. 

Both doubleheaders were originally scheduled to be away contests for Winona State; in the site-reversed series, WSU will be the visiting team on the scoreboard and bat first. 

Winona State (19-8, 2-0 NSIC) earned a sweep at Upper Iowa on Tuesday, March 28, beating the Peacocks 17-7 and 6-2 on the road in Fayette, Iowa.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES heading into the weekend...

The Warriors are 19-8 overall, 2-0 NSIC

WSU has won three straight against Sioux Falls, including a 6-2 win in the NSIC tournament last year. 

Winona State has a 31-game winning streak against the Mustangs, dating back to May 2, 2009. 

Savannah Serdynski leads the Warriors in batting average (.388)

Abbie Hlas leads the Winona State offense in hits (37) and at-bats (98).

Marissa Mullen leads Winona State in slugging percentage (.598) and home runs (4).

Logan AndersonCorinna Loshek and Serdynski are all 1-1 in stolen base attempts this season. 

Carly Engelhardt has the most Warrior triples on the year with three and has 21 RBI

In the circle, Abby Smith is 10-2 on the year and Abbie Hlas is 8-4.

Both Smith and Hlas are 1-0 in NSIC play this season. 

Earlier this year, Greg Jones surpassed the 900-win mark at Winona State. 

Sioux Falls Storylines, heading into the weekend...

USF is 9-10 overall on the season. 

- Megan Lawson leads the Cougars in hitting with a .420 batting average.
- Kait Van Der Zwaag has two home runs for USF
- Danielle Klenke has a .600 slugging percentage for the Cougars.
- Van Der Zwaag is 6-3 in the circle for Sioux Falls, while Kennedy Thomas is 3-3
- Rylie Jones is 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts for Upper Iowa. 


SMSU Storylines, heading into the weekend...

Southwest Minnesota State is 5-14 overall on the season. 

- Jillian Noel leads the Mustangs in hitting with a .328 batting average.
- Noel and Abby Russell both have one home run each for SMSU.
- Noel has a .459 slugging percentage for the Mustangs
- Allison Christians is 2-2 on the year in the circle for SMSU
- Three additional pitchers are all 1-4 on the season for the Mustangs; Karlie Miller, Morgyn Otte & Shelby Bloemendaal. 


WARRIOR NOTABLES

Winona State standout Abbie Hlas was named the 2023 NSIC Preseason Player-of-the-Year by coaches around the league. 

Head coach Greg Jones entered the 2023 NCAA Division II season 13th among active coaches in victories (891) and seventh in winning percentage (.747). 

Winona State has made 15 NCAA Division II Tournament appearances as a program, all with Jones at the helm.
