CLERMONT, Fla. - The Winona State University softball team claimed their second sweep in three days at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, beating Ferris State University 6-2 and Holy Family University 7-0 as the Warriors move to 5-1 on the 2023 spring trip and 12-5 overall on the season.
A balanced pitching performance from four different Winona State hurlers and some timely hitting by several Warriors, including
Savannah Serdynski, saw WSU pull away from both the Bulldogs and the Tigers on Sunday, March 5.
Winona State 6, Ferris State 2
Winona State built up a 3-0 lead after two innings and defused a fourth-frame rally by Ferris State to win their first contest of the day and fifth of The Spring Games competition.
Savannah Serdynski went 2-for-3 at the plate and also earned a walk, combing with Warrior teammate
Carly Engelhardt who went 1-for-3 with a pair of free passes, to generate enough offense to beat Ferris State for the second time this season. WSU left 29 runners on base and were held to just six hits overall, but several timely singles with runners on - combined with a wild pitch by Ferris State's Kristie Gray - put Winona State in control in the late stages of the game.
Abbie Hlas went 3 and 2/3's innings in the circle, conceding four hits and both Bulldog runs.
Abby Smith threw the final 3 and 1/3, earning the win while holding FSU scoreless. Ferris State used four pitchers in the game, walking five WSU batters and throwing four wild pitches.
Four different Warriors were hit by a pitch, with
Marissa Mullen,
Teaghen Amwoza,
Ashlee Chantos, and
Logan Anderson all taking advantage of free bases.
Winona State beat Ferris State 7-0 on Feb. 24 at the Lewis Dome Invitational and ran their record against the Bulldogs to 4-0 since March 9, 2015.

Starting pitcher
Skyler Calmes led Winona State to their second shutout of The Spring Games and third of the 2023 season, scattering four hits over six innings of work while striking out seven Tiger batters.
While Calmes combined with
Morgan Smetana in the Warrior circle in the victory,
Savannah Serdynski continued her strong day offensively, notching three RBI and scoring a run herself. Serdynski,
Marissa Mullen, and
Abbie Hlas all had RBI in the game, with Mullen and Serdynski both delivering doubles on the day. Hlas and
Teaghen Amwoza each had multi-hit games as Winona State won the inaugural meeting between the two programs.
Following the Sunday sweep, Winona State improves to 12-5 overall on the season. The Warriors will enjoy an off day on Monday before returning to the field on Tuesday, March 7 to take on Lewis University and Cedarville University. WSU will face the Flyers at 10:30 a.m. EST and take on the Yellow Jackets at 3 p.m. EST.
