Winona State softball defeats Lewis, Cedarville in Florida sweep

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Winona State University softball team was back in action on Tuesday, March 7, taking on Lewis University and Cedarville University at The Spring Games in Clemont, Florida.

Winona State saw a pair of stellar pitching performances propel them to a 2-0 day at the diamond, beating the Flyers 3-2 and the Yellow Jackets 6-1.

Winona State 3, Lewis University 2

Winona State standout Abbie Hlas held Lewis University to just four hits and did not concede a walk in a 3-2 Warrior win over the Flyers on Tuesday.

Hlas held the advantage over her Lewis pitching counterpart Delaney Garden, thanks in large part to Carly Engelhardt who hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to stake Winona State an early lead. Ashlee Chantos followed moments later with a sacrifice fly, scoring Marissa Mullen, giving Winona State the only three runs the Warriors would need in the game.

Lewis plated one run in the third inning and one more in the fourth frame, but Hlas and the Warrior defense were able to hold the Flyers scoreless the rest of the way.

WSU was flawless in the field and saw three Warriors contribute multi-hit games to the WSU effort.  Hlas, Engelhardt and Marissa Mullen each went 2-for-4 in the game, with Hlas and Mullen collecting doubles in addition to Engelhardt's home run. Lewis scored two runs on their four hits and committed one error.

With the win, Winona State moves to 5-1 over Lewis dating back to the 2018 season.

Winona State 6, Cedarville University 1

Abby Smith threw six innings of shutout softball for Winona State in their second game of the day as the Warriors cruised to a 6-1 win over Cedarville University.

Abbie Hlas and Carly Engelhardt both drove in a pair of runs to lead WSU offensively as Winona State claimed two wins for the second straight day, having defeated Lewis University 3-2 earlier in the afternoon.

Teaghen Amwoza's double was the only extra-base hit for Winona State, while Smith moved to 8-1 on the year in the Warrior circle. Smith allowed just three hits in six innings of work while the WSU offense collected 10 hits overall and played an error-free contest defensively.

Winona State remains unbeaten in the series at 3-0 all-time against the Yellow Jackets dating back to March 10, 2017 and the team improves to 14-5 overall in the 2023 season.
