WSU softball earns second-consecutive sweep, defeats BSU 2-1 and 10-2

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University softball team collected their second-consecutive sweep after defeating Bemidji State by scores of 2-1 and 10-2 this afternoon.

The Warriors (24-9, 7-1 NSIC) used timely hitting in the first game and an explosive game at the plate in game two to earn the doubleheader sweep over Bemidji State.

Game One: Winona State 2, Bemidji State 1
Neither team was able to string together enough offense to score in the opening innings of the game, and Abbie Hlas scattered just two hits in the first five innings.

WSU notched the game's first run as Cammi Riemer singled down the left field line to drive Libby Neveau across the plate to give Winona State a 1-0 lead after four innings.

In the sixth, Bemidji State put together a walk and two hits to tie the game at one apiece. The lead didn't last long as Riemer notched her second RBI of the game on a line-drive homer over the left field fence to give Winona State the 2-1 lead.

Hlas shut the door on the Beavers in the seventh as WSU held on for the 2-1 win. Hlas pitched a complete game, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four batters to earn the win.

Riemer led WSU at the plate, going 3-3 and driving in both runs, and Hlas added two hits as well.

Aimee Christenson led the Beavers with a 2-for-3 day as pitcher Kyla Damerow took the loss in the circle.

Game Two: Winona State 10, Bemidji State 2
Three Warriors had multi-hit games with Teaghen Amwoza leading the way, going 3-for-3 with a solo homer to lead off the six-run second inning for WSU.

In the second inning, Winona State collected six hits as Amwoza, Hlas, Carly Engelhardt, Neveau, and Riemer each drove in at least one run.

After Bemidji State scored twice in the third inning, WSU added three runs in the fifth and then ended the game on a Savannah Serdynski RBI bunt which scored Corinna Loshek to give WSU the eight-run, mercy-rule victory.

Skyler Calmes earned the win for the Warriors, coming on in relief and pitching 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. Abby Smith started the game for WSU and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.

Along with Amwoza, Engelhardt and Riemer each collected multiple hits. Engelhardt led WSU with four RBI and Hlas added two runs driven in.

Stella Dolan started in the circle for BSU to get the loss after 1.2 innings pitched with six runs allowed. Alexa Christenson, Molly Houts, and Mariah Stevenson each had two hits for the Beavers.
