Paul Engen was a four-year member of the Winona State University Football program. He graduated with degrees in Physical Education and Social Studies in 1965 and a master's degree in Physical Education in 1969. While working on his master's degree, he served as a Graduate Assistant for the football team. Since his time at Winona State, Engen has served as an educator, athletic administrator, and coach. He was also the president of the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA) from 1982-1984 and again from 1993-1996. In 2007, the football field at Appleton North High School was named Paul Engen Field in his honor.

What was your favorite sports memory during your time at WSU?
The year my wife Marcia was named the homecoming queen (1964). We were married with two children.

What would you say is your greatest athletic or academic accomplishment during your time at WSU?
I was part of two conference championships as an undergraduate (1962 and 1964) and one as a graduate assistant (1968).

How has your WSU athletics experience been influential throughout your life?
I believe the education department was excellent during my time at WSU.

Please share any professional or personal accomplishments.
I was named the Wisconsin Athletic Director of the Year (1981), AP Football Coach of the year (1992), won the D1 football championship (1992), and was inducted into the WFCA Hall of Fame (1998).

What is your current occupation?
I am serving as an assistant high school football coach. I am beginning my 58th year of coaching football.

What advice would you give to current WSU student-athletes?
Be good listeners. Strive to be the best you can be. Be a lifelong learner. Do not slot yourself.

Gaining my teaching degree allowed me to follow my dreams as an educator and football coach. If we follow our dreams, good things can and will happen for us.
