NSIC Weekend : Soccer

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University soccer team delves into the 2023 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) schedule with a two-match road trip this weekend.

Winona State will play on Concordia University, St. Paul on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. before then heading on to Augustana University for match on Sunday, Sept. 17.  The Warriors will take on the Golden Bears on the turf at Sea Foam Stadium and face Augie on Sunday at Morstad Field. 
 
Winona State recently wrapped up their non-conference slate with a 1-1-1 mark, having most recently earned a shutout draw on the road at Truman State.  Last fall, WSU earned a 9-6-4 campaign and 7-4-4 league mark. in 2022, WSU returned to the NSIC postseason for the first time since 2018, a year in which Winona State went 8-8-1 and 8-6-1 in league play.

Friday's contest will take place at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul while Sunday's game is at Morstad Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. 
 

WINONA STATE STORYLINES 

WSU has earned shutouts in two of their their three matches this year. 

WSU returns a trio of key attacking players who factored heavily in goal production last fall; Reanne Weil, Madelynn Drasher, and Abigail Williams look to lead the Warriors. 

Last season, the Warriors played in ten, one-goal games.  

WSU will be led by Seniors Madyson Dye, Reanne Weil, Sara Charboneau, Morgan Liebau, Hannah Dunlavy, and Caylee Ludwig. 

Winona State was picked tenth in the NSIC Coaches poll  

Winona State is averaging one goal per game so far this year. 

Head coach Jill Leibforth is in her first year as head coach at Winona State. 

Sarah Strating leads WSU in shots (9), having logged 172 minutes to date. 

Chloe Turner and Abigail Williams join Stating in notching goals this year. 

Winona State will play their first seven matches on the road to open 2023.  

WSU has a 24-6 all-time mark vs. CSP and is 12-10 all-time vs. Augustana.

WSU assistant coach Joe Davis will join for his second year as an assistant coach and first year under Jill Leibforth. 
 

Concordia University, St. Paul STORYLINES 

CSP is 2-2 so far in 2023. 

Head coach Steve Bellis will enter his 12th season at the helm of the Golden Bear program. Bellis has a record 0f 92-93-23 at CSP.

The Golden Bears are led in goal by Jessi Jordan (1-2) with three matches played so far at CSP and owns a shutout mark against Upper Iowa. 

Concordia University, St. Paul's top offensive threat is Corynn  Grabau, who has tallied four points. Grabau has two goals on the year, while Golden Bear teammate Katie Anderson has a goal and an assist.  

CSP lost 2-1 to Winona State on Sept. 30, 2022 in the last match up between the two programs. 
 


Augustana STORYLINES 

Augustana  is 2-1-1 on the season and ranked No. 20 in the current coaches poll.

The Viking most recently took on Fort Hays State, a 0-0 contest. 

Augustana starting goalkeeper Jillian Barkus has had three shutouts this season. 

Augie striker Hope Korte has had two game-winning goals on the year. 

Augustana defeated Winona State twice last year; a 2-0 regular season win in Sioux Falls and a 3-0 NSIC Tournament first-round win to open the playoffs.
