Winona State soccer drops NSIC contest at Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Winona State University soccer team traveled to Northern State University on Friday, Sept. 22 looking to claim three points on the road in NSIC action. The host Wolves had other plans and held off a Winona State rally to hand the Warriors a 2-1 setback. 

In Aberdeen, Winona State was able to cut the Northern State 2-0 lead in half with a goal from Grace Seim in the 38th minute but WSU was unable to find the back of the net any further on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Northern State struck first though Kelsey Selden in the 32nd minute, with an assist credited to Mia Zagorski. 

Less than two minutes later, NSU scored again when Paige Johnson converted another pass from Zagoriski for the 2-0 home side lead. 

The Winona State response was swift, as Grace Seim tallied an unassisted goal to help WSU regain some momentum late in the first half. 

Seim's strike was her first goal of the season and second career goal at Winona State. 

WSU earned a corner kick at 39:50, their second of the match, but were uable to get an attempt on frame from the ensuing set piece.

In the final 45, WSU again earned a series of corners in the middle of the half but could not solve NSU goalkeeper Alexus Townsend. 

Catheryn Hudak had a low shot turned away by Townsend in the 78th minute while Reanne Weil had an effort miss at the 83 minute mark. 

WSU's Johanna Shubert notched the final shot of the game for either team with just 40 seconds to go in the game. Winona State's Alyson Jumper had made a save on NSU's Avery Bladsel just moment's earlier. 

Winona State was unable to find the crucial second goal of the game to complete the comeback, falling 2-1. 


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

Winona State last beat Northern State on Oct. 4, 2019. WSU earned a point vs. the Wolves in a 1-1 tie at home on Oct. 16, 2022. 

WSU has had the opposition score first in all three Warrior losses this year. 

The Warriors had six players play the full 90 vs. NSU, a season high. 

Tonight's match is the sixth of seven away matches for Winona State to open the season. WSU is at home for the first time on Friday, Sept. 29 vs. Minnesota Crookston.
