St. Paul, Minn.- The Winona State University women's basketball team nearly knocked off Concordia University, St. Paul on Tuesday, January 30, in a Warrior road contest against the Golden Bears. WSU fell just short of achieving the upset, losing to CSP 59-57.
Winona State (5-15, 4-11 NSIC) was led by Olivia Gamoke with 13 points, while Emma Carpenter also hit double-digits for WSU with 11. CSP enjoyed a 23-point effort from Lindsey Becher as the Golden Bears improve to (15-5, 10-5 NSIC).
How it Happened: Â
Emma Carpenter and Alex Dornfeld connected on the first two buckets of the game, as Winona State led 5-0 in the first two minutes.Â
A back-and-forth first frame saw the two teams trade buckets and possessions. CSP used a layup as time expired in the quarter to tie the game at 17-17.
In the second quarter, both teams found scoring runs, with CSP hitting the first three baskets of the period. A WSU 11-1 run returned the Warriors to the lead as the teams headed to the lockeroom, with Vanessa Alexander hitting a 3-pointer with under 90 seconds to play.Â

The game turned in the third quarter, with CSP outscoring WSU 18-8 in the frame.Â
Olivia Gamoke would account for four of Winona State's eight points in the third quarter, including a mid-range jumper to open the Warrior scoring. Â
The fourth quarter found WSU mount a strong comeback effort, with the Warriors enjoying a 21-16 scoring edge. However, CSP was able to hold off WSU with a series of free throws in the final 15 seconds to counteract a late Mattie Schimenz 3-pointer, dealing Winona State a 59-57 loss.
