SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Winona State football had hopes of winning their third straight game, but Augustana shut out the Warriors 31-0 in a one-sided contest.
With the loss, Winona State falls to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the NSIC while Augustana improves to 5-2 overall and 5-1 within the league.
The Warriors started the game with the ball but were forced to punt after converting just one first down on the drive. Augustana then went on a 62-yard scoring drive to take an early 7-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, WSU traveled 46 yards over the course of 6:51 but the drive stalled after a missed field goal.
After trading punts, Winona State blocked the Vikings punt attempt and began their drive at AU's 28-yard line. The Warriors were unable to capitalize on good field position as Augustana tipped a pass and intercepted it at their own two-yard line. Six plays later, the Vikings found the endzone as an 85-yard reception contributed to the scoring drive. Augustana added a 54-yard field goal on the last play of the first half to take a 17-0 lead into the locker room.
Winona State wasn't able to garner any offensive traction in the second half, while Augustana added two more scores in the third quarter and held on for the 31-0 victory.
Jackson Flottmeyer went 12-22 in the air with 116 yards and one interception while being sacked four times.
Cole Stenstrom threw for 52 yards on 3-9 passing.
Joe Sikma caught four passes for 51 yards while
Jim Curtin and
Cayden Holcomb each grabbed two receptions.
Ty Gavin led the round game for the Warriors, gaining 29 yards on five attempts.
Quentin Pringle ran for 25 yards on six attempts and Flottmeyer and
Josh Buri each ran for 21 yards. WSU had a total of 116 yards rushing for the game.
Nick Bucaro and
Brent Jeske had a team-high seven tackles while
Conner Haggerty and
David Nies each picked up a sack.
As a team, WSU ran for 116 yards and passed for 168. Augustana had 365 total yards of offense with a balanced attack of 190 yards on the ground and 175 yards through the air.
Winona State returns home next week as the Warriors host Bemidji State on Saturday, October 26th at 1:00pm in Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
