LUKE HAERTLE DROPS 34 POINTS TO LEAD WSU TO NONCONFERENCE WIN

Winona, Minn. - Luke Haertle scored a career-high 34 points to lead Winona State to a 90-78 nonconference victory over Michigan Tech. 

All five WSU starters scored in double figures for the second straight game and Winona State went 9-20 from beyond the arc to outscore the Huskies in an offensive showdown. 

How it Happened: 

The Warriors and Huskies traded early runs with Michigan Tech leading by one at both the first two media timeouts of the game. A pair of Jones steals gave the Warriors a nine-point advantage with 3:52 left in the first. Tyler Mason and Haertle each had turn-around jumpers to close out the half and give WSU a 46-38 halftime lead. 

Heartle had nine points early in the second half, including a three-pointer to give Winona State their largest lead of the game at 66-51. The Huskies started to claw back into the game, cutting the Winona State lead down to eight, but Isaiah Thompson answered right back and threw down a slam to bring the lead back to double digits. The Warriors would take care of the final minutes and hold on for the 90-78 victory. 

Team Comparison: 

  • Winona State shot 60.4% from the field and 45% from three as Michigan Tech shot 50% from the floor and 40.6% from deep. 

  • The Huskies held the turnover advantage, forcing 14 turnovers and picking up nine steals while the Warriors forced 12 turnovers and garnered six takeaways. WSU did held a 17-14 advantage on points off turnovers. 

  • WSU won the battle down low, outrebounding MTU 31-18 and scored 40 points in the paint compared to the Huskies 32. 

Individual Leaders: 

  •  Haertle led all players with 34 points and picked up five rebounds and three assists as well. 

  • Jones tallied 20 points on 5-7 shooting and 8-8 at the charity stripe. Jones also grabbed two steals, both leading to Warriors buckets. 

  • Ty Fernholz scored 23 points off the bench on 6-10 shooting from deep to lead MTU. Marcus Tomashek dropped 22 points for the Huskies. 

Winona State will be in action on Saturday, November 23 in Kenosha, Wis. as they take on Hillsdale College before opening up conference play at Concordia-St. Paul on Tuesday, November 26.
