ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Winona State University softball team earned a split on the road against Minnesota State Moorhead on Saturday, March 30, winning game one 5-0 but suffering a shutout in the nightcap, falling 3-0.
Game 1: Winona State 5, MSUM 0 | WSU's
Izzy Howe put together a masterful performance in the Warrior circle, holding the Dragons to just four hits, all singles. Howe's Warrior teammates plated one run in the third and added three in the fifth to pull away from the Dragons in a game played in the City of Aberdeen Dome.
Winona State was led at the plate by
Alyssa Woelfel, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Abbie Hlas and
Carly Engelhardt both hit doubles in the contest and an error-free outing for WSU paced the Warrior win.
Game 2: MSUM 3, Winona State 0 | Winona State saw the tables turned in the nightcap, with the Dragons holding the Warriors scoreless to deal WSU split. WSU starter
Abby Smith held MSUM to just six hits, but a three-run first inning and ice-cold Warrior bats limited a battle-back opportunity.
Abbie Hlas was 2-for-3 offensively, while
Carly Engelhardt and
Logan Anderson both collected doubles. A trio of errors in the field stymied Winona State's effort fo claim the NSIC doubleheader from the Dragons.
Winona State (21-13, 5-3 NSIC) returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 when the Warriors host Concordia University, St. Paul in the home opener for WSU. The Warriors and Golden Bears will play a 2pm/4pm doubleheader at Maynard Johnson Field in Winona.
