WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University softball team settled for a split with the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday, winning game one against the Golden Eagles by an impressive 14-0 scoreline but falling in the nightcap 5-2.
Game 1: Winona State 14, UMC 0 |Â WSU scored early and often in the opener against UMC, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding seven in the second to take a commanding 11-0 lead after two frames. WSU would tack on three more runs in the third as the two teams would play the minimum five innings in the blowout.Â
Logan Anderson led Winona State with a 3-for-3 game at the plate while
Savannah Serdynski,
Carly Engelhardt and
Abbie Hlas all had multi-hit games for WSU. Anderson had a home run among her three hits and
Kiley Slaats had a pair of stolen bases.Â
In the circle,
Izzy Howe went the first four innings for the win, allowing just two hits while striking out five.
Morgan Smetana tossed one a shutout inning in relief for WSU in the victory.
Game 2: UMC 5, Winona State 2 | Winona State was denied the sweep with a 5-2 setback to the Golden Eagles, as UMC scored two runs in the first inning and the last inning of the contest.Â
Abby Smith threw the first six innings and took the loss for WSU.
Jayda Berg tossed one inning in relief; combined, the Warrior pitching staff struck out five, walked five, and allowed eight hits overall.Â
Alyssa Woelfel was 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double, the only WSU extra-base hit of the game. Overall, Winona State stranded eight runners and suffered three strikeouts.Â
Winona State will host Bemidji State University on Saturday, April 6, at Maynard Johnson Field in Winona. WSU and BSU will see a 1 p.m. first pitch in the NSIC doubleheader.Â
