USF no-hitter denies Winona State softball sweep in Sioux Falls

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -  A game one no-hitter dealt the Winona State University softball team an opening setback on Saturday, April 27 but WSU rebounded to win game two to salvage a sweep at the University of Sioux Falls in the penultimate NSIC doubleheader on the Warriors 2024 schedule. 

USF's Maddi Duncan held Winona State hitless in game one, offsetting a stellar effort by Warrior starter Izzy Howe, who held the Cougars to just a single run, scored in the fourth inning.

Game 1: Sioux Falls 1, Winona State 0 | WSU managed just a pair of walks offensively, with Carly Engelhardt and Savannah Serdynski both drawing free passes in the game. Winona State struck out five times in the seven inning contest.  Abbie Hlas reached second base in the top of the fourth frame following an error by the USF outfield, representing the best scoring chance in the game for WSU. 

WSU starter Izzy Howe went the distance in the Warrior circle, scattering four hits while striking out six. Howe did not allow a walk but suffered the loss, moving to 12-7 on the year. 

Game 2: Winona State 6, Sioux Falls 0 | Jayda Berg went the distance in the Warrior circle for WSU in the nightcap, earning a key rebound win for Winona State. Berg received outstanding offensive support from Carly Engelhardt who hit three doubles in the game. 

WSU scored three runs in the top of the first frame, setting the tone for the 6-0 shutout win.  The Warriors would add two more in the third stanza and solo score in the top of the seventh inning. 

Engelhardt had two RBI among her three doubles while Alyssa Woelfel also added a pair of runs batted in. Sam Keller had two walks and a basehit in the leadoff spot for WSU. 

Winona State (33-19, 17-9 NSIC) travels to Wayne State College to wrap up the the 2024  NSIC regular season, with a doubheader on Sunday, April 28. WSU will face off with WSC at noon in Wayne, Nebraska.
